Tourist Information COMANA MONASTERY A convent for monks, Comana Monastery’s Dedication day is "Saint Nicholas"on 6 December. The 15th century Comana Monastery is attributed by tradition to Vlad Tepes (the Impaler). It also had a wooden church. Today’s church was built in 1854. Nowadays the most important part of the monastic structure seems to be the precinct with towers on corners, the cells with portals on brick pillars at the first floor, archways on pillars to the second floor and the Princely Court with a watchtower on stone pillars. The monastic establishment was founded by Vlad Tepes Voivode himself around the middle of the 15th century, and then it was reconstructed during the reign of Radu Serban Voivode towards the end of the 16th century and at the beginning of the 17th century. Inside the church of the monastery there were interred Radu Serban Voivode, Nicolae Patrascu Voivode (the son of Mihai Viteazul Voivode), as well as the members of the Cantacuzino family. The church underwent repairs and restoration under the earnest care of the princely Serban Cantacuzino between 1699 and 1703; during the same period, it was also painted. In 1769, the church was severely damaged by a Turkish invasion, and in 1854, it was repaired and restored to its former condition. The location chosen for the meeting, Comana Natural Park, is the largest protected natural area of the Romanian plains. Less than 40 km from Bucharest, in Giurgiu County, it is not well known. “The park, which has an area of 25,000 hectares, has the advantage of being a wet region, which are lacking in Romania, apart from the Danube Delta.
